If you’re a mom you’ve probably heard of lactation cookies. Many moms believe in their power to help them increase their milk supply, but the truth is that there’s not enough evidence to support that.

They do seem to have magical effects. And it’s all about the ingredients.

Breastfeeding or lactation cookies are made of ingredients like flax seeds, brewer’s yeast, or rolled oats that are believed to improve milk supply and help nourish new moms.

The ingredients may vary, depending on which recipe you choose. Remember they are still cookies so don’t abuse them. You can either make them yourself or buy them in-store.

WHY CHOOSING LACTATION COOKIES

Because while it’s the perfect nutritious meal for your baby and every new mom’s dream, breastfeeding may not always go as planned for some moms, for different reasons:

  • Low milk supply
  • Latching
  • Concerns about baby’s weight
  • Concerns about mom taking medications
  • Can’t pump at work
  • Cultural reasons
  • Lack of family support

So, yes, breastfeeding is challenging and as a new mom, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed. In fact, CDC reports that 60% of mothers don’t breastfeed for as long as they planned.

But there is hope. Many moms swear by these lactation cookie bites.

DO LACTATION COOKIES WORK?

Science doesn’t back up this information, because there’s not enough evidence. But moms believe in the power of these lactation bites. They just seem magical.

Many of them contain galactagogues (various herbs that increase milk supply). The most commonly used herbal galactagogues are fenugreek, blessed thistle, and alfalfa.

WHY CHOOSING LACTATION COOKIES

1. NUTRITIOUS SNACK

Being a nursing new mom is exhausting. And breastfeeding makes you really hungry, so having some nutritious snacks handy wouldn’t hurt.

They contain herbs, vitamins, and minerals to boost your energy and immune system. You so need that energy boost.

2. MAY BOOST YOUR MILK SUPPLY

Because of the essential vitamins and minerals they contain, lactation cookies are believed (though not enough evidence) to enhance milk supply.

Yet, if you’re struggling with low milk supply your first choice would be a lactation consultant to identify any underlying problems.

Lactation cookies would be ‘it doesn’t hurt trying’ type of thing.

3. MAY IMPROVE DIGESTION

Lactations cookies may help you with digestion because some cookies are made with herbs (like fenugreek) which are associated with a healthy digestive system.

4. SNACK FOR EVERYBODY

These bites are not only for nursing moms. Anyone can eat them (without producing milk). So your partner may snack on them safely.

But always read the label and make sure the ingredients are safe for you mainly if you have known allergies or are pregnant.

HOW DO LACTATION COOKIES WORK

They are believed to work for moms with low milk supply because they contain ingredients like brewer’s yeast, flax seeds or oats. It could just be a placebo effect.

We know for sure they are good for one thing at least: satisfy your hunger and nourish your body. For example, you can have a lactation cookie during one of your pumping sessions.

LACTATION COOKIES – COMMON INGREDIENTS

Lactation cookies are mostly made of good fats like coconut oil and flaxseeds, and of course most of them have rolled oats (for energy support).

Many nursing moms swear by brewer’s yeast as the most effective ingredient, though no evidence proves that.

If you have any concerns about using brewers yeats in your diet please do further research or just forget about it.

Here are common ingredients found in lactation cookies:

1. BREWERS YEAST

It provides you with B vitamins (no B12), protein, selenium and chromium. It’s known for the ability to help with digestion, skin, hair, and liver function.

It may have adverse effects like constipation. Be aware that it belongs to the yeast family and you may want to skip this if you have any allergies, are taking any medications or if you are diabetic.

Once again, before consuming brewers yeast consult with a specialist to make sure it’s safe (it’s related to yeast infections, like thrush).

2. FLAXSEED

Flaxseeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. They also provide potassium, calcium, iron, Vitamin E, and Vitamin B.

Yup, only good stuff. Flaxseeds are a good option because they have so many benefits: improves digestion and insulin tolerance, prevents IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and may lower blood glucose.

3. ROLLED OATS

Rolled oats give you a good amount of soluble fiber, magnesium, vitamins and minerals.

They also slow down the absorption of carbs into the bloodstream. You know what that means? Low risk of having spikes in your blood sugar.

4. FENUGREEK

Used for centuries, this herb became famous for its properties associated with increased breast milk.

It has phytoestrogens ( are plant-derived compounds found in a wide variety of foods, most notably soy) and lowers your blood glucose levels.

An interesting fact is that your urine and baby may end up smelling like maple syrup.

If you’re diabetic, pregnant or have allergies consult with your doctor and be cautious, as fenugreek lowers your blood glucose levels, causes uterine stimulation and it’s from the chickpeas/peanuts family.

It’s always best to see your doctor or lactation consultant when you deal with low milk supply.

Consider lactation cookies a delicious and nutritious snack that you can always take it to go or have it nearby when you breastfeed or throughout your busy day to boost your energy.

If you want to bake your own lactation cookies and do something fun (if your baby allows you) you can enjoy making them using the original lactation cookie recipe.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1. DO LACTATION COOKIES MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT?

They are cookies, after all, so use them in moderation, like you would with any other cookie. Eating too much of anything can make you gain weight and will surely cause an imbalance in your diet.

2. HOW FAST DO LACTATION COOKIES WORK?

You’ll start seeing results pretty fast, but being consistent is the most important step. You can enjoy one or two before you breastfeeding/pumping sessions.

3. WILL LACTATION COOKIES MAKE YOU/YOUR BABY GASSY?

It depends on which kind you end up eating: homemade or from the store. Make sure you stay away from chemicals and preservatives, artificial sweeteners and GMOs.

You may want to consider vegan lactation cookies.

4. WHO CAN EAT LACTATION COOKIES?

Anyone. Cool, right? They do support breastfeeding moms, but they’re actually good for anyone: so feel free to share them with your partner and other kids.
