How can I keep my house clean with a new baby?

I’m sure you’ve asked yourself this question many times. Me too.

It’s hard to keep up with housework with a baby around. Sometimes you may even feel like cleaning your house with baby wipes. That would be a challenge.

But you’re tired and overwhelmed. That’s what it’s like to be a mom.

If you’re looking for ways to keep your house clean with a baby around you’ve come to the right place. This ultimate guide is meant to help you keep your house clean every day.

It includes tips and tricks on HOW to get housework done with baby and WHAT cleaning products are safe to use around your little one.

Ready?

1. BABY MONITOR

If you decide you want to do some cleaning around the house while your baby naps, then a baby monitor is more than perfect. You can still keep an eye on your baby while you do some housework.

If you’re looking for the best baby monitor on amazon check out Infant Optics Baby Monitor.

And if you want to make sure your baby stays asleep a white noise machine will help cover-up any noise you may make while you clean your house.

2. CLEAN UP BEFORE YOU GO TO BED

You can make it a routine to tidy up each room before you go to bed. You don’t want to wake up in the same mess, do you? Plus, it’s going to help you start your next day on a happy note.

You’re going to wake up and your living room will not be invaded by tons of toys.

3. BE SELECTIVE WITH TOYS

Speaking of toys, you probably bought any toy you could find for your baby to enjoy. I plead guilty too. But they get bored easily, and it’s always that makeup brush that they want right?

A good way of keeping your baby entertained and your house clean at the same time is to rotate the toys.

You put all the toys in one large basket like this one. You take out 3-5 (random number) toys per day so your baby can play with different ones. That will keep your baby entertained and you’ll have less cleanup to do.

4. MULTI-TASK

Your baby will not sleep all day long. I get it. But you can still do small house chores like laundry, loading the dishwasher or wiping countertops with your baby around.

I always clean my sink (bathroom or kitchen) every time I wash my hands.

I have an extra sponge in my bathroom and clean my bathtub every time I take a shower. It saves me so much time. And you can too.

These Bluetooth headphones will help you handle calls no matter what you do (and no matter what phone you have). You can talk on the phone while you fold your clothes.

5. CLEAN YOUR HOUSE BEFORE BABY ARRIVES

That ‘s a very smart way of keeping your house clean. Declutter your house at your own pace before the baby is even born.

It will help you tremendously. The less unnecessary stuff you keep the less work for you after the baby is born.

But you probably have already done this. Pregnant women tend to develop those nesting instincts during pregnancy right before the baby arrives.

Whatever you don’t need sell it on Craigslist, eBay or do a yard sale. Make some extra money for your bundle of joy.

6. SCREEN TIME CLEAN TIME

It’s time to make good use of screen time. No reason to feel guilty. You’re doing it for a good cause. If you choose a clean house over a filthy one then the compromise is totally worth it.

Carly The Mommy agrees too. You can place your baby in a bouncer and play some nursery songs on TV while you speed clean.

7. STICK TO A SCHEDULE SO YOU DON’T LOSE YOUR MIND

It’s easy to get frustrated and overwhelmed when you’re a mom with a baby trying to clean the house. And maybe you have a dear husband and a job you need to tackle too. You can easily go crazy.

But don’t! I created a FREE PRINTABLE WEEKLY CLEANING SCHEDULE FOR MOMS, like you and like me. Moms helping moms is the best way to make motherhood easier.

8. USE A TIMER

You may be getting more housework done if you know you’re being timed. It may actually help you stay more focused and give you a boost.

This would be a good idea if you’re trying to clean your house with a baby and toddler. Your toddler will surely enjoy doing some house chores to beat the clock.

9. MAKE IT A FAMILY ‘AFFAIR’

It’s hard to manage the baby alone and get cleaning done. Ask your husband (who can also change a dirty diaper) to help you or your other kids, if it’s the case.

If you load the washer, have your husband dry and fold the laundry. Your mom or sister wouldn’t mind giving a hand.

You have enough on your plate and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you feel you can’t handle all the tasks. You don’t have to do EVERYTHING. Nobody expects you to do that. You’re not a robot.

10. HAVE A MISCELLANEOUS BASKET

Have a basket somewhere in the house so you can shove stuff throughout the day. At the end of the day, you can sort whatever it’s in it, that way you deal with the mess once and not having to run back and forth all day long.

This basket is large enough to help you achieve that.

11. TAKE IT STEP BY STEP

If you have 3 bedrooms don’t try to kill yourself trying to clean everything all at once and also take care of the baby. You aim for 100 things to get done and end up doing none.

If you play with your baby in the living room look around and do small tasks while you sing to your baby.

Or you can vacuum with your baby around. You know babies love that kind of sound (white noise) because it reminds them of the wonderful womb.

Vacuuming before nap time is even better, it might just put your baby to sleep.

12. FOCUS ON THE MAIN TASKS

Clear up some space by picking up the toys on the floor rather than wiping the kitchen cabinets. Declutter the entryway rather than wiping your windows.

Prioritize your house chores so you don’t become overwhelmed.

13. OPT FOR FROZEN MEALS

We all want an easy life. Who has time to cook for hours? I figured. What you can do though is pick one day during the week when you do prep a few meals to last you for an entire week.

This will allow you to spend more time with your baby. Or you can cook easy and fast meals every day. You can use my FREE PRINTABLE MONTHLY MEAL PLANNER.

14. KEEP THE AIR FRESH

Ok, maybe keeping your house clean with a baby is not going that well. That’s fine. Nobody will judge you and if they do ignore it. You’re still a fabulous mom.

Going back to fresh (stinky) air, an air purifier will do the job. That way you won’t be afraid of visitors.

15. EACH ITEM MUST HAVE ITS OWN SPOT

Know where each item in your house must go. In other words, have a designated spot for everything. If the diapers and diaper cream belong to the baby changing station then make sure they stay there.

If your mail belongs in a mail holder you keep somewhere in your office then make sure it goes there.

16. KEEP DISINFECTING WIPES IN EACH ROOM

You never know how your day will go, but let’s say at some point you end up laying down in bed while your baby naps in her crib. You can’t fall asleep knowing the massive housework you need to get done.

But you don’t feel like leaving the room either because you want to keep an eye on your baby.

Have some multipurpose disinfecting wipes nearby and wipe whatever can be wiped. That way you don’t have to leave the room to get any cleaning supply to do the job.

17. GET A BABY WRAP CARRIER

This keeps your baby safe and close to you while you’re being efficient. You seriously can’t go wrong with a baby wrap carrier.

18. CREATE A BABY PROOF PLAYING AREA

Somethings can’t be done while you’re carrying the baby, which may aggravate you. You want to be able to monitor your baby all the time because you want to be a responsible mom.

Have your baby play in this indoor/outdoor play yard while you sweep those floors.  It will help you tremendously.

19. KEEP IT TIDY ENOUGH

Being filthy is different than being messy. Messy is acceptable, filthy is not. And your house doesn’t have to be immaculate, it just has to be tidy enough to provide a clean and safe environment for your baby.

As long as no one steps on a poopy diaper, you’re good.

20. PICK UP STUFF AS YOU GO

Before leaving your bedroom pick up those milk bottles that need to be sterilized. And dump that dirty diaper you forgot about it. You can also pick up those dirty socks and put them in the hamper.

Don’t leave for tomorrow whatever you can do today.

21. EASY TO USE CLEANING TOOLS

Now that you kind of have an idea on how to keep your house clean with a baby you probably want to know what tools can you use so that housecleaning becomes easy and fast (cause you need to change a diaper soon, at least I do).

Let’s see what are some CLEANING TOOLS that will make your house chores a breeze:

  • Cordless vacuum – you want a cordless (less bending is better mainly if your carrying your baby while you do this) and lightweight vacuum (you want to be able to multitask, so vacuuming with one hand and holding your baby with the other hand will do the trick). Check out this one.
  • Swiffer duster – this duster allows you to basically dust anything, even your car. It has an extendable handle and easily traps dust. You can get the unscented version to make it safer for your baby.
  • Dust mop – this mop comes with washable pads and it rotates 306 degrees, which is great cause you can do it with one hand, while of course, you hold your baby with the other one.
  • Floor mop – at some point (when all of a sudden your white socks that you had just put on don’t seem that white anymore) you will come to the conclusion that, yes, it’s time to mop the floors. But because your time is more than precious, you want to use it wisely. And you will with this dry and wet mop. Small enough, lightweight and easy grip. Oh, and it’s cordless, which is what you want. You don’t want to risk getting tangled while you’re holding your baby. No way.

Next on this list are BABY-SAFE CLEANING PRODUCTS.

The last thing you want is exposing your baby to harmful chemicals. How do you avoid that? By making smart choices. Amazon has several natural and baby safe cleaning products.

  • Puracy Natural All-Purpose Cleaner – streak-free, plant-based formula, residue-free, multi-purpose, safe for children and pets, natural, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, gluten-free, vegan, biodegradable. Whew, I thought I would never be done. That’s a long list of good stuff. This will clean your entire house. Seriously. And you want something multipurpose to save money, storage space and to make house cleaning easier. Fewer supplies for you to carry around.
  • Better Life Natural All-Purpose Cleaner Wipes – these were created by 2 dads. Interesting. No wonder they’re baby safe. They are free of SLS, petroleum solvents, parabens, ethers, synthetic fragrances, alcohol, ethoxylates, and dyes. They are safe (no harmful chemicals), green (biodegradable, not animal tested) and powerful (fights grime and grease like there’s no tomorrow).  Great!
  • Dapple Baby Dishwasher Pacs or Soap – no matter how you choose to wash the dishes, this brand offers safe ( without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic dyes and fragrances, chlorine, formaldehyde, alcohol, SLS, SLES, MEA, DEA, and TEA) products so you can wash that pacifier with no fear.
  • Biokleen Natural Laundry Detergent – it’s eco-friendly, non-toxic, plant-based, with no artificial fragrance, colors or preservatives; kind to those with chemical sensitivities and allergies. Sounds like it meets the criteria for baby-safe laundry detergent.
  • Natural Essential Oil Air Freshener – those dirty diapers can get really smelly sometimes. That’s usually when someone knocks at your door. And you tend to panic. That’s ok because someone already thought about this and created this organic air freshener. It’s bio-degradable, with no artificial perfume or fragrances, no animal by-products or synthetic colors or contaminants, hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, vegan and eco-friendly. This air freshener safe around children and pets. Music to your ears.

If you’re looking for a bleach alternative The Laundress – All-Purpose Bleach Alternative would be the right choice to whiten and brighten your day, I meant your house.

It’s a non-toxic, biodegradable, fragrance-free, gentle, color-safe and chlorine-free oxygen bleaching system. You can use this single product to clean your entire home—floors, tiles, sinks, and surfaces.
